Exploring Avila, Santa Teresa, and finding the start of our Camino

Here’s the source of our Camino

So our first day in Avila we wended our way through cobbled streets and pretty plazas, past so old Cathedrals, Churches, colourful buildings interspersed with “se vende” signs and crumbled walls to the Convento de Santa Teresa solidly standing at the top of rise and overlooking a landscape stretching out beyond the city walls.

The Church is splendid inside and houses the room where the saint was born, a glittering small chapel dedicated to her, and alongside the church a room full of books she wrote, about her, depictions of all the convents she founded and some interesting relics and objects she used : her walking stick in later life, heavy rosary beads, her ring finger preserved.

Then we took off for another walk around the walls and towards the start of the Camino. The sun came out and people walking, children playing a version of “first to the peg” at the bottom of the hill.

The path starts at the bottom of the hill, on the other side of the river, and then we walked back up. It was a steep climb, but made worthwhile as an old man sitting outside his home in the fading sunlight regaled us with stories of festivals, a garden, and a film made years ago in Avila starring Sophia Loren and Carey Grant.

The next morning , walking around the top of the town ,we stumbled across the Camino waymarkers: the shell on a wall and the yellow arrow at my feet

We’re ready to walk Camino Teresiano!!

Checking in at Perth International T1

All masked up and ready to go

Waiting now after putting pack , all neatly enclosed in a special bag, onto the loading trolley . Strangely quiet in this lounge , probably because it’s 9.30 on a Sunday night night and people headed to security and gate

Yes here they are .Just been through security . Once again checked. Do I look suspicious ? Maybe it’s those multi pocketed baggy walking pants .

Am off line at the moment as Doug has cleverly inserted our Spanish sim cards( maybe not so clever as we’ll discover they have run out when we use them in Madrid ) ? Anyway it seems like the writing is ok , not the photos

Bye from the airport lounge

Ha Have just checked onto the airport wifi and here it is . First blog on trip ,half hour before boarding .

Stop the packing and unpacking: off tomorrow

I am looking forward to getting on that plane for Madrid tomorrow evening . One would think that after a few times packing for a long walk one would…… Like many caminophiles(?) I read the Camino forum and follow the travels of my Camino buddies along the various Spanish paths . I am always amazed at the talk of what to take , the detail of makes and weights .And the sometimes heated exchanges. Now I’m one of them again : pondering each packet of Panadol or nurefyn , wondering whether to take the antibiotics in case my tooth flares up, squeezing moisturiser and sun cream and walkers foot cream into smaller containers . Shall I take the thermal ? Shall I take the jeans that can be thrown away , as an extra as already have 2 walking pants . Am I crazy ?

All this is after the route planning , the essential accomodation booking .And the long hours spent deciding if that is the way we want to walk and what the weather might be like in June .

This evening as I walked along our beach to witness a spectacular sunset , the sun glowing orange and the first stars visible above a sea glistenimg and rumbling, I confess I did think about staying here, unmaking all those arrangements, settling back in.. And Albanese is the new Prime Minister……

All just so much chaff really . I’m off tomorrow “ready or not here I come “
